Heaviest rain in 21 years hits the Red Centre
A widespread rain event is hitting much of Australia, including the Red Centre, with Alice Springs being inundated with its heaviest rainfall in more than 20 years. Locals have been taken by surprise as a trickle in the Todd River quickly escalated into a flood. There were 100 millimetres of rain in just 12 hours, a shock for many who haven't seen rain like it in 21 years. As the Todd River continued to flow throughout the day on Wednesday, the small town with a population of 30,000 people was cut in two. A man was reported to be trapped in the rapids as his car was swept off a causeway, with police saying they had to deploy a boat to rescue the man.
