China-US climate agreement a 'positive development'
The United States and China have struck a surprise climate agreement but the pact seems to have more symbolism than detail. Perth USAsia Centre CEO Gordon Flake says the deal is a start to get America and China to cooperate on climate matters. 'At this point we certainly welcome symbolism, it is certainly a lot better than the alternative, which is continuing friction and divide on this issue,' he told Sky News Australia. Mr Flake said the deal 'provides a basis for cooperation' which could extend beyond climate policy. 'A positive development, as your report just said the devil is in the details but you got to start somewhere,' he said. 'Given the impact that climate change is having on China itself, it obviously has an interest in treating these issues seriously and to see it inside the tent is a positive development.'
